ADVOCACY

NYCCAP advocates for children, adolescent, families, and members.  Our focus is on children's mental health and the implementation of parity as well as preventing psychologists efforts to get prescribing privileges.  We reach out to legislators and the community.  We have collaborated with the New York State Psychiatric Association (NYSPA), the New York State Pediatric Association (NYSAAP), and other medical organizations on pertinent issues like preventing psychologists prescribing privileges in the state.

7/27/2017--NYCCAP's Advocacy Committee is urging everyone to continue to call our legislators to vote NO to any "repeal and replace" bills. I encourage everyone to also ask colleagues and patients & family members to call their legislators. CREDO has a seamless system for calls not just to NY legislators but for calling countrywide. AACAP and APA has sent membership links to call in. Continuing to make these calls and visiting House of Representative members at local offices are goals of our committee. Thank you for taking the time to make a difference!

On February 21, 2016, NYCCAP held a joint 2016 Legislative Breakfast with the New York County Psychiatric Society (NYCPS) and the New York County Medical Society (NYCMS) at the New York Academy of Medicine. Over 50 physicians attended a collaborative forum moderated by Michael Goldstein, MD and Stuart Kleinman, MD. Speakers included: NY Senator Liz Krueger; NYS Assembly—Richard Gottfried; NYC Council--Mathieu Eugene, MD; Manhattan Borough--President Gale Brewer; and NYS Assembly--Robert J. Rodriguez. The spirited discussion involved many issues regarding health and mental health that are pertinent to all physicians and patients.

Legislators expressed interest in having our membership’s expert opinions and in building bridges for our improved and communications in an effort to continue our advocacy efforts for our profession and patients. Forum topics included: Increased access to care, the pros and cons of a Single Payer system, parity, and concerns with restrictions on prescription formularies as well as NY State’s e-prescribing law. The need for improved mental health resources in schools and ensuring the role for psychiatrists in the “Thrive NYC” program were highlighted. The event was an informative experience and will be the start of a long term collaboration with our colleagues. Strengthening our relationships by keeping lines of communication open with legislators is the best way for us to advocate for our patients, their families, and our profession.

Upcoming events:

  • Visiting key legislators in the fall
  • Collaborative legislative breakfast with NYSPA and MSSNY early 2017
  • Training and collaboration night in preparation for AACAP’s Legislative Conference 2017 in Washington, DC
